Digging in the yard

April is National Safe Digging Month TAGS:

EgressWindows.com is a big supporters of the notion of safety first.  That is why we want to create awareness of National Safe Digging Month.  April is the time of year many homeowners are venturing back out into the yard to do projects.  Before you pick up a shovel and start that project by digging, ask yourself; what is under there?  Are there power lines?  Gas lines?  Communication lines?  Water lines?  Sewer lines?  The list of potential hazards just under the surface are many. There is a free service that can help you.  A few days prior to digging simply dial 811 …Continue reading

Fire Prevention Week 2013

Fire Prevention Safety Week: Prevent Kitchen Fires TAGS:

This week is national Fire Prevention Safety Week – and this year they’re striking out against the leading cause of fires at home. “More fires start in the kitchen than in any other part of the home,” warn the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), during their Fire Prevention Safety Week. “Cooking is the leading cause home fires and home fire injuries. Between 2007 and 2011, U.S. Fire Departments responded to an estimated annual average of 156,600 cooking-related fires – resulting in 400 civilian deaths, 5,080 civilian injuries and $853 million in direct damage.” Kitchen fires hit particularly close to home …Continue reading

Fire Prevention Safety Week: Have 2 Ways Out TAGS:

This week is national Fire Prevention Safety Week – and their message couldn’t hit closer to home. Every year, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) holds their Fire Prevention Safety Week – with a special message to help people protect themselves and their families from fire. This year, the message is one we feel particularly passionate about: “Have 2 Ways Out.” They write: It is important to have a home fire escape plan that prepares your family to think fast and get out quickly when the smoke alarm sounds. What if your first escape route is blocked by smoke or …Continue reading

Product Reviews for Basement Window Installation – Husqvarna Saws TAGS:

As more and more enterprising homeowners take charge of their own basement remodel, we thought we’d offer some tips and tricks straight from the contractors. Here are our thoughts on three of the most popular saws used for cutting windows in concrete walls. A basement window installation for egress is kind of like installing a swimming pool – it involves a lot more than just digging a big hole! One challenge, for example, is cutting the gaps for basement windows right through the existing walls of your home. Here are three popular products from Husqvarna you can use for cutting …Continue reading

no means of egress

Basement Escape Window – Not Just for Fire TAGS:

A means of egress is an essential in any basement apartment – both legally, and practically. But it’s not only fire than makes installing a basement escape window an important idea; as one Pennsylvania woman recently discovered. When Rosalyn Willis, 59, journeyed into the basement of her Berks county home, she had no idea that she wouldn’t remerge for three whole days. She was checking on a power outage in her Douglass Township home, likely caused by water than had flooded her basement. After clambering down the stairs, however, the rickety wooden steps collapsed behind her – trapping her downstairs. …Continue reading

National Safe Digging Month

April is Safe Digging Month TAGS:

Whether your basement is beneath a ranch house or a mansion, adding windows to it requires one identical process – digging a big hole! To ensure people dig those holes safely, and to reduce the risk of property damage or personal injury, the Common Ground Alliance has declared April to be “Safe Digging Month.” What’s beneath your feet? For homeowners, the answer could be power lines, cables, gas pipes and sewer lines. As more and more townships beautify themselves, more and more of the essential wiring that keeps our cities ticking has been transferred beneath our feet. For homeowners in …Continue reading

What does Egress Mean? TAGS:

The English language is a funny thing. For the most part it’s constantly changing, evolving and developing. Then, sometimes, you’ll find a word so old people have practically forgotten where it’s come from. For example, according to signs in railroad stations, you still “alight” from a train – even though most people think “alight” means setting something on fire. Another commonly confused word is “egress.” Ask most people what the definition of egress is and they’ll generally answer “a type of bird.” (That’s actually an egret.) Egress is another word for “exit”, and is used in building code to refer …Continue reading
